Tanya’s Ride details finalized

Tanya's Ride all set to go

Firstly, we wanted to advise the membership of the great success of the Steve Hancock Memorial Ride held on Saturday. We had three ride groups (Peloton, Tempo and Social) with almost 40 riders participating. All groups stopping at the Ghost Bike to share their thoughts so thanks to all for coming out.

Next Up – Tanya’s Ride Saturday October 2nd from Albion Hills Conservation Area

Tanya’s Ride has become a core funding raiser for the Brain Injury Society of Toronto, and we are looking to continue supporting this important organization. Last year we raised over $20,000 and are looking to reach this level again in 2021.

Whether you can ride (a minimum donation of $100 is required) or not, please support this event by clicking on the link below. We are also designating the ride as a “Try-A-Ride “event for potential new members so please feel free to invite a friend or two. They just have to complete the additional link on RaceRoster to fully register.

Sign up or donate here

We have now finalized all the plans and this year we are teaming up with master chef Luca at Vibo Restaurant to provide an alternative, and improved, approach to the post ride festivities. This, combined with the improved location at Albion Hills, should make for the best event ever.

Food

We plan on serving a hot vegetarian soup, a hot non-vegetarian sandwich, a vegetarian sandwich option, and a bean salad for the post ride meal. Luca will provide the oversight, and some of the components of the meal, while VCC will assume some of the preparation and responsibility for serving our riders and volunteers.

Please continue to use the Race Roster food choices for vegetarian or non-vegetarian (ignore the descriptions) so we can ensure everyone gets their preferred food choice.

Rides

We continue to offer four great ride choices, and if warranted, will split the Tempo group into two to accommodate a wider range of rider speeds. Therefore, we should be able to accommodate all rider distances and speeds.

Road (Peloton) – +/- 100 km starting at 10am (mid ride VCC supported stop to be included)
Road (Tempo) – +/- 80 km starting at 11am
Road (Social) – +/- 50 km starting at 11am
Gravel – +/- 70 km starting at 11am (gravel paced)

Please note that if the weather co-operates, and the temperatures are warmer than normal, we may move the ride start times back 30 minutes so that we can get you home a little sooner. More on that to follow.

Sign up soon to ensure we can provide you with your meal choice.

We wanted to remind you of some upcoming great events so you can get them into your calendar.

Steve Hancock Memorial Ride – Saturday, September 18th

Tanya’s Ride – Saturday October 2nd, 2021

We are working through the final plans for this great event which is lead by the Luder Family in memory of Tanya. The location has been booked and will once again be held from Albion Hills Conservation, but we have switched to Elmview 1 which is an upgrade from last year. Albion Hills site map

  • Road (Peloton) – +/- 100 km starting at 10am
  • Road (Tempo) – +/- 80 km starting at 11am
  • Road (Social) – +/- 50 km starting at 11am
  • Gravel – +/- 70 km starting at 11am (gravel paced)

We will once again require that each rider donate a minimum of $100 with 100% of those proceeds going to the Brian Injury Society of Toronto. The club will cover all the operating costs including food service after the rides.

Sign up will once again be completed through Race Roster which can be located here: Race Roster sign up.

We will be designating this ride as a Try-A-Ride event with the OCA so please feel free to encourage some non-VCC members to come out. They simply have to complete an addition form in Race Roster. We will engage with them to assess their riding capabilities (or have then reach to info@www.velocitycyclingclub.com before signing up).

This should be a great season ending event covering off all aspects of what Velocity represents.

Looking some additional variety? Why not Cycle 4 St. Joe’s on Sunday September 26th?

Why not sign up to support St Joseph Hospital and join the Chain Reaction team led by Bill Greene.

Join the Chain Reaction team.

This ride is raising money for our local hospital and offers rides from 25km to 100km. The event begins at the Velodrome in Milton making for a beautiful ride through the countryside, including rest stops for refuelling along the way.

Signature Ride Updates

The second annual Tour D’Abernethy from Beaver Valley Ski Club was once again a great success. We had over 30 riders participating, and the event raised $17,500 for Camp Ooch. Jim’s wife Cathy and his daughter Nicole who rode, attended. Thanks to all who participated.

Watch for updates for the Steve Hancock Memorial Ride scheduled for Saturday September 18th. We should be offering at least two ride options. Steve’s Ghost bike has not weathered well and we are funding, and working with the organization, to bring it back to an appropriate condition in advance of the ride.

ECC Explorer Dr Event – Saturday August 28th

Our friends at ECC have been holding their club competition this month which culminates in the all-out bash “Explorer of the Century”. A 100 kilometre (25 laps) or 100 mile (40 laps) of Explorer Drive this Saturday starting at 8:45 am from Max Ward Park. Max Ward Park location

2nd Annual Tour D’Abernethy

2nd Annual Tour D'Abernethy - August 21st from Beaver Valley Ski Club

As the calendar has turned to August it means we are now less than three weeks away from the 2nd Annual Tour D’Abernethy ride hosted by VCC from the top of Beaver Valley Ski Club in Collingwood.

Once again we are looking to raise funds for Jim’s favourite cause, Camp Ooch for kids and families affected by childhood cancer. Last year the group, including Jim’s friends and VCC members, raised almost $50,000 for Camp Ooch and the funds have been put to very good use by expanding the reach of wheel access across the property.

Camp Ooch is also naming one of the main pathways on the property in Jim’s memory.

So, let’s continue on with the success of the inaugural ride and sign up to ride, then enjoy the post ride on-site catering and of course lots of beverage for rehydrating.

We ask that all riders make a donation as part of Ride.Give.Live. Even if you can’t attend, donations are welcome. We will send out the link for donating in the coming days.

The day’s events
We are offering two road rides to start (rumblings of a potential gravel ride remains under discussion):

  • Approx. 120 km ride for the more ambitious riders. Plan for some hills
  • Approx 80 km ride which also should have some hills to climb

The ride calendar is set up on the home page of the club website so please sign up. The ride start times will be finalized in the next week but have been tentatively set at 7:30am and 9:30am which should enable most to finish together.

Looking forward to a great event.

Peloton rides added

Peloton Rides Return to VCC

We are pleased to add the regular Peloton rides back into the VCC fold on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s starting at 5:30pm. These rides will depart from the parking lot at Humbervale Park Baptist Church located at 763 Royal York Rd.

These rides will average 30-33 kph and include spirited sections at much higher pace. If you have not previously ridden with this group we ask that you contact Craig Tyndall at ctyndall@gmail.com to discuss your capabilities before registering. This is required as these rides require a high threshold of fitness and skill to ensure that these rides are conducted safely and all can enjoy the outing.

With this addition the club now has rides happening on 6 days of the week and more to follow.

Gravelocity update

July Re-opening

Let's Get Rolling Together - VCC is Open Again

Hello VCC members

We are so pleased that Stage 3 has been reached and we can re-open club riding without unrealistic restrictions.

The remaining restrictions are that we are subject to our club mandated 18 rider maximum per ride (we are setting 10 for Clips and Tips), that the ride captain must verbally confirm at the start of each ride that no rider is feeling any COVID symptoms (but our club members are accountable and we are sure no one will attend if they are experiencing signs of COVID or have recently been exposed to someone with COVID) and participants must register through our reservation system. No walk ups (or non VCC members) are permitted as we are required to maintain a log of all riders for each ride for contract tracing purposes.

As with other cycling clubs, there will be no exceptions to the rules to comply with the regulations of the OCA and ensure insurance coverage provided is available.

As you have seen we originally had a very aggressive ride calendar and feel that we would prefer to ease into club riding and see the interest level from our membership and move forward from there.

Plan on attending a ride? Sign Up for a ride here before arriving:

Re-opening ride
What better opportunity to re-open starting with the annual Steve Hancock Memorial Ride which we are holding this coming weekend on Saturday July 24th with these rides.

  1. +/- 105 km route that we used last year SHMR 105km route
  2. +/- 45 km SHMR 45km

Regularly scheduled rides
We plan to commence regularly scheduled rides departing from the eastern parking lot at Humbertown on July 26th:

Monday evening at 6pm – Clips and Tips for those looking to get comfortable riding in a group or prefer shorter distances (25-30km)
Wednesday evening at 6pm – Tempo paced, no drop ride from 45-60 km
Saturday morning at 8 am – our traditional DPH no drop ride to Oakville at Tempo pace with a distance of 75 km
Sunday morning – Our “Get Outta Town” rides return with the routes changing from week to week. For those interested in hearing about these rides please contact kluder@www.velocitycyclingclub.com to be added to the WhatsApp group chat.

We plan to gradually add additional rides, including some of our favourite gravel rides and our initial “Test Your Limits” rides, once we have a read on the membership wants.

For those who have not been riding in groups it is always a good idea to freshen up on your Ride Guidelines and Etiquette by accessing our club document  https://www.velocitycyclingclub.com/club/ride-guidelines/

Thank you to everyone for your patience in these unparalleled times and we look forward to some excellent riding.
