Club Ride Update, ECC Explorer of the Century

Signature Ride Updates

The second annual Tour D’Abernethy from Beaver Valley Ski Club was once again a great success. We had over 30 riders participating, and the event raised $17,500 for Camp Ooch. Jim’s wife Cathy and his daughter Nicole who rode, attended. Thanks to all who participated.

Watch for updates for the Steve Hancock Memorial Ride scheduled for Saturday September 18th. We should be offering at least two ride options. Steve’s Ghost bike has not weathered well and we are funding, and working with the organization, to bring it back to an appropriate condition in advance of the ride.

ECC Explorer Dr Event – Saturday August 28th

Our friends at ECC have been holding their club competition this month which culminates in the all-out bash “Explorer of the Century”. A 100 kilometre (25 laps) or 100 mile (40 laps) of Explorer Drive this Saturday starting at 8:45 am from Max Ward Park. Max Ward Park location

ECC has kindly extended the invite to VCC members. If you are a joint member, you already know this so you can sign up here. https://etobicokecycling.com/signup/?sheet_id=53.

If not, you can join ECC for just $10 and double your riding options. Or, just come out and check out the festivities which includes a hotdog vendor at noon time. Yum!!

Tour D’Abernethy – Plans Firming Up

Tour D'Abernethy - Plans Firming Up

We are now one week away from the 2nd Annual Tour D’Abernethy and we are getting all our ducks in a row so that the event flows smoothly. The top of Beaver Valley Ski Club on the morning of August 21, 2021 awaits your arrival and we keep our fingers crossed for some great weather.

We are looking for a few more 80km participants. If you remain interested, please sign up for either ride on our club calendar found on the Home Page of the website. We would like to lock down numbers by Monday so that we can have the food service finalized.

Food service will be supplied by the Flying Chestnut and Boshkung Brewing Co https://boshkungbrewing.com/ is providing some of their finest selections for your efforts. We will have additional fluids and coffee for the start.

Those who have already signed up will receive a final details e-mail a few days before the event.

Can’t participate? Why not make a donation (we’ll take any amount).  https://support.ooch.org/diy-2021/rideforjimabernethy

Looking forward to an amazing and safe event. Rich Williams will have the routes perfected and we are sure all participating will enjoy either the 120km or the 80km.

2nd Annual Tour D’Abernethy

2nd Annual Tour D'Abernethy - August 21st from Beaver Valley Ski Club

As the calendar has turned to August it means we are now less than three weeks away from the 2nd Annual Tour D’Abernethy ride hosted by VCC from the top of Beaver Valley Ski Club in Collingwood.

Once again we are looking to raise funds for Jim’s favourite cause, Camp Ooch for kids and families affected by childhood cancer. Last year the group, including Jim’s friends and VCC members, raised almost $50,000 for Camp Ooch and the funds have been put to very good use by expanding the reach of wheel access across the property.

Camp Ooch is also naming one of the main pathways on the property in Jim’s memory.

So, let’s continue on with the success of the inaugural ride and sign up to ride, then enjoy the post ride on-site catering and of course lots of beverage for rehydrating.

We ask that all riders make a donation as part of Ride.Give.Live. Even if you can’t attend, donations are welcome. We will send out the link for donating in the coming days.

The day’s events
We are offering two road rides to start (rumblings of a potential gravel ride remains under discussion):

  • Approx. 120 km ride for the more ambitious riders. Plan for some hills
  • Approx 80 km ride which also should have some hills to climb

The ride calendar is set up on the home page of the club website so please sign up. The ride start times will be finalized in the next week but have been tentatively set at 7:30am and 9:30am which should enable most to finish together.

Looking forward to a great event.
