Club Charity and Memorial Rides

Just a quick reminder that we have 3 great VCC rides lined up for you this season. To start we have the Steve Hancock Memorial Ride on Saturday, July 9th. There will be three ride options to replace our regular DPH Saturday morning ride. You can sign up now on the VCC calendar.

Peloton Group – +100km departing at 8:30am
Tempo Group – approx. 70-80km departing at 8:30am
Social Group – approx. 50km departing at 9am

The second is the Tour D’Abernethy on Saturday, Aug 20^th and lastly is Tanya’s Ride on Saturday, Oct 1^st. Pencil these in! They are great rides and always well attended.

Furthermore, in VCCs continued spirit of “RIDE, GIVE, LIVE”, Bill Green is heading up a Team of riders in support of St Joseph’s Hospital for the “Cycle 4 St Joe’s” on Sunday, Sept 25th. Money raised goes towards timely emergency care, better mental health programs and new technology and equipment. This is our local Hospital so let’s show our support. Note there is a $20 discount on registration before July 1^st so act fast!

Firstly, VCC has been awarded $10 000 in funding from the Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries and the OCA. The funding is part of the Ministry’s goal of rebuilding cycling in Ontario. Your club’s goal for 2022 will be to use the funding to rebuild Community Programming, Marketing & Social Media, Community Events and Equipment/Marketing Investment. This is a tremendous windfall, and we look forward to bringing greater visibility to your cycling club.

Building on this positive note on May 2nd, 2022 Rob Givens and Keith Luder presented a $5000 donation to the Brain Injury Society of Toronto (BIST). Arbor Memorial, with whom Rob works, has an employee-funded charity called the Arbor Memorial Foundation. Every year employees nominate a charity, and this year they chose Rob’s request to support BIST. Many of you know that Tanya’s Ride supports BIST, and it is through Velocity CC Rob was introduced to BIST and the valuable work they do.

Thirdly, VCC member Warren Cooney has been involved with Cycle for Sight (CFS) for a few years as a tandem bike captain/pilot for various blind stokers. He was introduced to the ride at a promotional event held at Chain Reaction in November 2018. Warren had never ridden a tandem before and certainly not with a blind partner, but assures me it is a fairly easy skill to acquire, and the experience was fantastic. The event didn’t run the last 2 years for obvious reasons, but it is back this year. Now, they have a shortage of riders to act as captains. Club exec. Keith Luder has already agreed to sign on.
